As a musician and a music teacher, I know that it is vital to know who will be listening to my performances. It is not appropriate to perform jazz selections at a hard rock club. Nor is it appropriate to play Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to first gra…

I teach band, jazz, guitar and music technology at Wahconah Regional High School. I am interested in bringing teaching into the 21st century, and preparing students for the new skill set that they will need to be successful in todays global economy.

Smartmusic

I do virtually all of my teaching via SmartMusic. (www.smartmusic.com). Although I don't like the name -simply putting the word "smart" in front of something doesn't make it so, I do like the way the program interacts with it's own gradebook- Impact (I don't understand the name here either, but I'm willing to let it go).
Perhaps the coolest feature on SmartMusic is the function that allows the user to import any MP3 file into the SmartMusic player, and then change the key, or alter the tempo without changing the pitch. I can use bits from the Jamey Aebersold jazz improvisation series, or any bit of recorded music I have for students to record themselves with. I can even record myself playing chords on the guitar and send that recording to students with instructions for them to record a track over my playing, and submit it for review. It is indeed a very powerful program.

Know your audience

As a musician and a music teacher, I know that it is vital to know who will be listening to my performances. It is not appropriate to perform jazz selections at a hard rock club. Nor is it appropriate to play Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to first graders. The audience will simply not connect, and tune out.

I have become a big fan of both the Kindle reader and the Stanza app for the IPhone (these apps are not native to the IPhone; i.e. you don't need an IPhone to use the apps), If you haven't see… Continue

Sgt. Pepper and Technology

As most of Berkshire county knows (because of the excellent press we received in the Berkshire Eagle) The Wahconah Music Department performed the Entire Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in April of 2009. I did all of the arranging of the band parts, our choral director Ann-Marie Desautelle did all of the choral arranging. It was quite a thrill.
